New Science and Engineering Hall at GWU

CGA was involved in another award winning facility! George Washington University’s new Science and Engineering Hall has won the Concrete Foundations Association’s Overall Grand Project of the Year Award! This new 700,000 square foot science and research building consists of fourteen floors in total, and is the largest academic building dedicated to these fields in the nation’s capital. Six of the floors are underground; two floors are research labs with floor to floor heights of 16 feet, and four floors of underground parking. The eight floors above grade include research labs, classrooms, offices, visitor spaces, and a mechanical penthouse. CGA worked with Ballinger AE as the vibration consultant for this challenging project.

The project posed many challenges, including vibration generated by the Washington D.C. metro tunnel which runs adjacent to the building as well as a large high-bay testing lab located five stories above the building’s foundation. Many of the new research labs within the building house sensitive lab equipment; vibrations from these and other sources could interfere with equipment operation and important research. CGA provided input into the unique structural design, as well as the mechanical design of the facility in order to ensure that vibration impact to vibration-sensitive research was minimized.

George Washington University’s new Science and Engineering Hall was well received by the university! This successful expansion of the research and teaching capabilities at GWU would not have been achieved without the collective efforts of all the qualified and experience companies who made the final product possible.
